Our Ethos
'As ten years olds our comprehension of Art is direct, dependent on our eye, our imagination and those beautiful, unforgettable surfaces of Titian, Rembrandt, Van Dyck and the others.
This is where I try to be whenever I am engaged in making a copy. More and more deeply absorbed in the touch of the original, as a record of the Artist's thought, a communion if you like, across centuries, leading to my finished picture.
Of course, I cannot speak to quality, that part is up to you, but my approach is to recreate artworks in their entirety, sourcing period-correct woods, fixings, linen until finally beginning to paint.
Certainly, technical knowledge is essential. My work would not be possible without a cohort of similarly devoted people, now under the banner of Rawthorn Studios.
My copies are cosmetically and forensically accurate, but if we surpass expectations it is always because something of original spirit exists in what we make... and that can be quite uncanny.'
